Cyber bullying assignment - part 2

Part B:

1.) I would tell Teresa to keep all of her information private because anyone can find out so much personal information about you in a matter of 20 minutes. Even something as simple as putting your exact birthday and name can lead to someone figuring out your phone number and where you live.

2.) I limit my privacy settings so only friends see, but I do not use Facebook very often.

3.) You should always consider that whatever you post cannot be deleted from the entire internet, even when you think you've deleted it someone could have took a picture of your picture and they could have it forever.

Key Questions:

Who will be able to see my profile?
Am I at risk if I send this text/post this picture?
Can anyone besides my friends see this?
Even if I delete it, where will it go?
Am I sharing things about anybody else, that may not want to be in my post?
Will my post offend people?
Will my post still be here in a decade?

Cyber bullying Assignment

1.) Done

2.a.) Quoted from the article. "Cyberbullying is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. It has to have a minor on both sides, or at least have been instigated by a minor against another minor. Once adults become involved, it is plain and simple cyber-harassment or cyberstalking. Adult cyber-harassment or cyberstalking is never called cyberbullying."

b.) The kind of threat, the frequency of the threats, the source of the threats and the nature of the threats

c.) The first thing that I would do if I was stuck in a situation like this would be to tell someone that I trust for example: teacher, mother, brother. One thing that I would make sure I did before I blocked the cyber bully/ harasser is to save the chat log and gather all of the information that was passed along to me so that I have evidence. I would not want to retaliate because it could possibly make things worse.

d.) Everyone has different reasons as to why they cyber bully, most kids cyber bully each other because they are often motivated by anger, revenge or frustration. It is much easier to cyber bully with technology because they are not affected by the physical reaction of whom you are bullying over the internet.

e.) The two main categories of cyber bullying are cyber bullying by proxy and direct attacks.

f.) I think that Instant Messaging/Text Messaging Harassment, Internet Polling and Stealing passwords are the most serious types of cyber bullying.

The Power of Social Media Assignment

1.) Propaganda is the manipulation of public opinion. It is generally carried out through media that is capable of reaching a large amount of people and effectively persuading them for or against a cause. I think that this video was propaganda because Jason Russel tried to persuade his audience (the people watching the Kony 2012 video) in believing that Kony was a horrible human being that abducts kids and manipulate them. I learned that if you have a great cause, then anything is possible. Jason Russel set his mind to something and persued it. Even though he didn't stop Kony, hundreds of thousands of people all shared the same belief and tried to stop him.

2.) I believe that this video and message can be trusted because they had secondary information - Jacob. They also got Obama to respond back to them and he sent out troops to try and catch Kony.

3.) I do not have a biased opinion on the "Invisible Children's" charity because they made a very positive change in the World because everyone had the same opinion on Kony, so they all tried to stop him which had a big affect on the world, but the charity could also be using the money to fund things for themselves like the electricity bills at their houses or gas for their cars.

4.) The key criticisms include: a.) It overly simplifies a complicated situation. b.) It does not include the people of northern Uganda themselves c.) It advocates a disempowering approach.

5.) Yes, I would have to somewhat agree with the critics.

6.) Social media can have a very powering affect on people, but the feedback from people may be positive or negative. It is a good way to get the message across because videos can go viral in a matter of minutes.

7.) The world has changed in a negative way since Facebook, Twitter, Youtube had been created because so much hate, racism, discrimination etc. is going on now because it is a lot easier to say something to someone over the internet because you can’t see their reactions behind the screen. However, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc. are not entirely bad. For example: If you have friends over seas, you could talk to them via Facebook.

8.) The article quoted, "Jason Russell, co-founder of the nonprofit Invisible Children, went to a psychiatric hospital after he was arrested for traipsing, naked, down a San Diego street."

9.) This teaches us that social media can be so powerful that it can make people go insane, literally. Not all media is bad, but not all of it is good either and before you upload something on the internet you should think twice about it because anyone could have negative or positive feedback.

10.) Just like I said above, everyone could have negative or positive feedback depending on what you upload to the internet. You shouldn't post anything that you may regret in the future because videos can go viral and once they're out there, there's really no way of getting it back.

Evaluating Websites Assignment

1.) Ethos means the credibility of the writer or speaker. Ethos is often shown through tone and style of the message and through the way the writer or speaker while referring to different views.

2.) An authority site has ethos. It is a site that can be trusted and can give you what you are looking for. Authoritative sites are not always the first results on google, but if you keep scrolling your almost guaranteed to find an authoritative site.

3.) It is important to have a “gatekeeper” in determining a site’s authority because gatekeepers are credible editors who approve the validity of the facts. If there isn't a gatekeeper, then the facts may be incorrect.

4.) When researching a project, a television news article is not enough information because articles originally written for broadcast may be short and summarized because on-air time is brief and most segments are written as overviews.

5.) The Treehugger.com site is connected to news and radio, it's reputable enough to have an interview with Sheryl Crow and Bill Nye the Science Guy and nationally-known companies are comfortable advertising on the site.

6.) If the sources on a site are questionable, if you can't determine who wrote and/or published the site and if you can't tell if the site is a personal page without gatekeepers, it may not be credible.

B

1.a.)

  1.) Personal with biographic data.
  2.)  Promotional - selling a product.
3.)  "Current" - to provide extremely up-to-date information, as for newspapers' sites.
4.) Informational - to share information on a particular topic or hobby.
5.)  Advocacy/persuasive - to convert you to particular point of view.
6.)  Instructional - to teach a unit or course of study.
7.)  Registrational - to register for courses, information, and/or products.
  8.)  Entertainment.

b.) I most commonly use promotional, entertainment and informational websites because they are the ones that I use on a daily basis, I don't really need to use advocacy, instructional websites etc. on a daily basis. It all depends on what I'm doing that day.

c.) The 5 key evaluating guidelines are currency, coverage, objectivity, accuracy and authority. I think that the currency and accuracy are the most important because the website may not have correct information anymore if the currency is not checked and if there are a lot of grammar mistakes and false information, then it is a dead give away that the website is not a reliable source.

2.a.) 1st site: This site is the homepage of an organization domain. The purpose of this site is to provide an unbiased data clearinghouse and a forum for public discussion based on Dihydrogen Monoxide.

2nd site: This site is the homepage of a commercial domain. The purpose of this site is to kind of self explanatory, it is the Japanese news. It covers news topics such as Politics, sports, business etc.

2.b.) 1st site: Currency - The website is not current, even though on the bottom of the page there is a "last updated" bar, I have done some research and in fact, the most recent information is around 2 years old. Accuracy - There are no grammar or punctuation errors.
Authority - Tom Way is responsible for this page. There are no direct links that relate to Dihydrogen Monoxide and there aren't any clear sources.
Objectivity - This is definitely a biased website. The only thing that the page talks about are the harmful affects of the Dihydrogen Monoxide.
Coverage - The titles and headings are clear, but the navigation within the website is not very clear.

2nd site: Currency - This website does seem to be current since some of the news stories were published just this week and the last update was 11:34 AM today.
Accuracy - There are no grammar or punctuation errors.
Authority - The Yomiuri Shimbun is responsible for this page. There are direct links and the sources coming from the news articles are clear.
Objectivity - The website does not seem to have any biase, but if I was to get into farther detail then some of the articles may be biase.
Coverage - The titles and headings are clear, the website is easy to follow and the navigation is clear.

2.c.) I believe that the first site is unreliable and the second site is reliable.

C.) Bad - http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/sightings.html
~ Does not look professional
~ Cannot find the publisher
~ Unreliable information - octopi have gills, not lungs, so they would not be able to survive outside of water for very long
~ End in .net (network)

Good - http://www.pbs.org/
~ Can find publisher right away
~ Has media resources
~ Ends in .org (Organization)
~ Looks professional

Assignment 1 - Digital Literacy

1.a.) I do agree somewhat with this article because classroom technology is changing miraculously. In the article it quoted, "The idea that the world we shape in turn shapes us is a constant." which I definitely agree with and can relate to because the world isn't shaping us, we're shaping ourselves to do these amazing things with technology. There have been so many different iPhones, laptops and etc. designed in the past 5 years, just from a group of people who wanted to shape our world's technology. It's funny how this article is based on technology in classrooms and in general, meanwhile I'm sitting here writing this on my computer. This tells you so much based upon how school was twenty years ago, and how school is now.

b.) This quote speaks so strongly to me because like the quote stated, "Newspapers, television, and computers—all human inventions." The world wouldn't be where it is today with it's modern technology if we didn't have people like Steve jobs, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin etc. who impacted our world in such great ways. They have changed the way that society works now a days. If it wasn't for them, we would still be lighting candles in the dark and roasting meat around a fire.

c.) Digital Literacy: The ability to operate new technology and computers to use and create information. A person’s ability to perform tasks effectively in a digital environment and to evaluate and apply new knowledge gained from technology.
Visual Literacy: The ability to recognize and understand ideas conveyed through actions or images. Applying our visual senses to understand, create and use images for different purposes.

d.) Some of the programs that I have used are Youtube, Blogger, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Twitter and Flickr. The programs that look interesting to me are Snugmug, Yelp, Ping and Hi5 because their names seem very intriguing and they were the ones that stood out to me.

2.a.) Program 1 (Wordle) -The purpose of Wordle is that you can get a 'cloud' of colourful text with different fonts and layouts. This program could definitely be used in Humanities, it would be a creative way of summarizing something. For example: If we had to write about vikings, I could go onto Wordle and enter words like strong, fierce, brave. It would then put it into a decorative collage of words for me. The pros of this would be that you can tell your students about this program and they can express there words or feelings - making it a very creative learning environment. The cons to this is that you don't really learn anything from it and I don't really see this program being fun after I've used it multiple times, I'd essentially get bored of it. I would use this program, but like I said, I don't see it as it being a lot of fun for me.

Program 2 (Voice Thread) - The purpose of Voice Thread is a place where you can have private online discussions where you can send images, videos and documents to the group conversation. In Humanities, you could hold a group discussion even when we're not all in class or if we miss any homework, we could all join the discussion and look to see if there is anything we missed in Humanities. The pros of this program is that you can discuss topics with your peers on everything and anything. It's a great way to interact without having to meet up with each other. The cons to this program is that I'm not too sure how safe it is because important documents and images could be shared with one another and I haven't really heard of this site until now. Honestly, I probably wouldn't use this program because I'd rather meet up with somebody and have a discussion with them face to face instead of talking through a computer, but that's just my personal preference.

Program 3 (Prezi) - The purpose of Prezi is so you can make a presentation out of using a slideshow, which shows us how much our technology has innovated. We could use this a lot in Humanities because I have seen Prezi already being used to present projects instead of poster boards and paper. This is a very fun way of creating your own project! The pros of this project is that it teaches you about modern technology and it seems like a great way to get kids to want to do projects. The cons of this is that it seems kind of confusing to use ...I tried it out and ended up deleting a lot of my progress. I would think about using this, but for now I'll just stick with poster boards.
